Scientists from the American Geophysical Union have developed an intensity scale for atmospheric rivers, enabling forecasters to rank their severity.

Atmospheric rivers are defined as long, thin regions in the atmosphere that can move moisture over thousands of miles, and recently caused severe weather across much of California and Pakistan.
