UK government contingency backstop: A welcome boost, but no panacea

Anybody intrepid enough to have left their homes since most coronavirus restrictions were lifted will know that it has not heralded anything like a return to normality.

My trip to the Royal Albert Hall last week was a case in point: compulsory negative test or double vaccination to enter, mask-wearing vigorously encouraged, and enough hand sanitiser to float the Ever Given.
